The Basic Family Social System: Especially In African Setting: The principal structure of a family is the one based on Dad, Mom, and the kids. The second level of family line is on other extended relationship shared between the moms and dad and the kids and others. Therefore; the joint family is an extension of the nuclear family.
Kids who share one mom and dad however not another are called “half-siblings” or “half– sis.” Kids who do not share moms and dads, however, whose moms and dads are married, are called “step-brothers” or “step-sisters.” If an individual is married to the moms and dad of a kid, however, is not the moms and dad of the kid themselves; they are called “stepfather” or “stepmother.” Especially in a polygamous setting.
Such a nuclear family refers to when a member of the family relates to another distance family as a member of the same family. Especially in the African setting, this can go on and on for as long as you want. Every little connection either in marriage or other relationship qualifies individual to be a family member.
In an African setting, the womenfolk are frequently homemakers and cook for the whole family. They refer to male members as the provider or guardians of the home. The thing has since changed, and Dad and Mom are becoming co-partner in the family social responsibility. They are both responsible for the family up-keep and even in some cases; women are the breadwinner of the family.
In the past; women don’t have access to education like the male counterparts. However, in today’s social set up; women have equal knowledge and are competing favorably with the male.
Children seem to be closer to Mom than to Dad. It may be emotional than consequential. Women are affectionately, but men are disciplinarians. It may explain why the kids are closer to their mom than to the dad.
In some culture; in-laws interfere in the family affairs and the couple can tolerate them. However, the modern family doesn’t permit the intrusion of in-laws. Instead, the inlaw can offer their advice, but the couple will be at liberty to accept such input if it’s agreeable to the couple.
The most family appreciates family reunion, and they look forward to it. It is a time to get the kids to know uncles and anties and others. Such reunion help to keep the family line together for a long time to come.
